When Base44 is the right call
- You want a generated app and you are on a tier that exports the full source to GitHub.
- The product is simple enough that the generated codebase is the handoff.
- You are already in the Wix ecosystem and want the app to live there.
When Codalio is the right call
- You need a PRD, data model, and architecture, not only a repository of generated files.
- Engineers will take the product further and need the spec that explains why the code looks like this.
- Test and review have to happen before merge, on every version, not as a later cleanup.
Why the spec matters
AI made generating code cheap. It didn't make generating the right code cheap.
Exporting source is necessary and, on Base44’s Builder tier, it is available. It is not sufficient. A repository without a spec is a generated app someone now has to reverse-engineer.
Codalio’s output is the spec and the code together. The code is yours either way once you export; the difference is whether the next change has a contract to follow.
